A very simplified speedometer chart below shows sales volume hit 65K for the fourth quarter.

These two panels may be pleasing to look at, but they take up a lot of real estate on the dashboard. I’ve seen folks spend a good deal of time building much more sophisticated graphics of this type so that when new data comes in, the graphics update nicely. Bottom line: it’s helpful to know the numbers. Clients might not need the pretty colors or shapes, especially after seeing this dashboard more than a few times a month.

Stephen Few’s book Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of Data talks about the “13 mistakes of common dashboard design” and discusses how to make dashboards more effective.9

Another example I see often is when different line charts are fit and compressed onto the dashboard page, and as a result every trend looks mostly flat for one or two reasons. The first reason is that the chart becomes so small you can’t really read it. The second reason is that there might be one line that so dominates the others, you can’t tell what’s going on with the other lines. As a result, they’re either buried or they look flat. Even if there’s an ability to expand the size of the charts, the quick at a glance visual leads the user to believe there’s nothing to see here.

Here is the chart as it appears on the dashboard:
